As digital multimedia becomes increasingly popular, many people are making the jump from traditional media based formats (i.e. DVD) to more versatile, compact, electronic formats.
Many formats helped revolutionize how we archive and distribute personal home videos to our friends and family. Most notably, DivX and it's open source counterpart, XviD, are pioneers in video encoding technology. However, new, more efficient "Codecs" are now available. These are commonly known as part of the MPEG-4 ASP family.
However, this guide is meant to be an introduction the the newer family of Codecs, MPEG-4 AVC. Specifically, we will deal with what is considered as the most popular of the aforementioned family, x264. For more information regarding the h.264 standard, go see what wikipedia has to say about it.
